Through the pages of William’s book, he has given the inside story on what it was really like to deal with men who had carried out some of the most heinous crimes, both civilian and terrorist related, in our history. Men that, in the Maze in particular, he had to form working relationships with in order to maintain order and discipline in the Prison, a Prison where Prison Rules on the whole could not be applied. Meetings with Loyalist God Fathers Michael Stone, Billy Wright and Johnny Adair, in addition to leading members of the Provisional IRA were a regular occurrence and happened not always at William’s request.
Unfortunately William’s life as a Prison Governor came at a price. Due to his high profile career, he eventually came to lose everything he held dear.
William was the Senior Governor in charge of the Maze Prison on 27th December 1997, the day that LVF Godfather Billy Wright was murdered. His death was the start of William’s descent into life-changing circumstances which would ultimately lead to the loss of his home, health, career, family and on a number of occasions, almost his life both through murder attempts and finally thoughts of suicide.
